Gulf of Naples

Capri is geologically striking, rising in parts straight out of the sea with enormous vertical cliffs and boasting the iconic Faraglioni or needle-shaped rocks, natural arches and emerald water. A circumnavigation is the best way to appreciate this natural marvel. Mario Testino filmed Dolce and Gabbana’s famous Light Blue commercial here capturing the sex appeal of this alluring island. If alighting, explore beyond the Marina Grande to discover the real Capri. Lunch at anchor and a swim in Capri’s emerald waters are one of life’s great pleasures.

Procida and Ischia

Beyond the headland of the northern Gulf lies Procida – the least frequented by the jet-set, and all the better for it. A few miles of water makes a huge difference to the sheer scale of humanity – in Procida, the film location of Il Postino and the Talented Mr Ripley, with its peeling stuccoed walls and its buzzing piaggio trikes you can really begin to relax into your Italian holiday mood.

Half an hour on lies the larger island of Ischia with its famous thermal baths and exclusive treatment centres grown up to cater to the discerning clientele. Angela Merkel is a regular. Porto d’Ischia is a buzzing marina right in the heart of the action and a great place to watch the world pass by from the comfort of Oh Susannah. Elizabeth Taylor was here filming Cleopatra and Ischia provided the set for her real life love affair with Richard Burton.
